Re: Shooting Meet
Montreal River is 90 minutes north, it's just outside the southern border of lake superior provincial park. Pancake is just a bit north of Batchewana Bay, so maybe like an hour.
Re: Shooting Meet
I plan on shooting Friday because it is Rangefinder Day International!!!!
I also plan on shooting as much as possible on Thursday since it is World Film Photography Day.

Re: Shooting Meet
Well at least you'll be shooting something
Let me know if you want to do something.

Re: Shooting Meet
We'll see. Even if I can't get away from the house, I plan to shoot as much as possible. I wouldn't mind shooting in a church or during a mass since it is also Good Friday but unfortunately its a faux pas here. I must warn you that on Rangefinder Day, I will not talk about anything but rangefinders and rangefinder photography.

Re: Shooting Meet
Well if we get out I might just use my rangefinders. I want to compare the meter on my Ricoh to your little handheld one anyway.
Re: Shooting Meet
I got a much better meter than that small one - a Sekonic L-588 incident/spot meter. If I'm able to meet with you, I'll bring that one. I use the L-588 when metering is critical and as a reference. I use the much smaller Sekonic L-208 more often because it is usually more accurate than the meters on my cameras and it is very portable.

Re: Shooting Meet
Now please don't beat me up if you already know this. I'm guessing you do.
But just for the sake of others around. The meters on older cameras are narrow spot meters. They work by telling you the exposure needed to turn whatever you point them at to 18% grey, even if what your shooting is black or white. (the same goes for handheld spot meters)
18% grey is pretty dark, somewhere near to the shade of the text above this post. "Re: Shooting Meet"
Embarassing as it is, I will admit to only understanding this a few years ago. It was really evident when I would shoot snowy landscapes or portraits of people with white shirts. I just couldn't figure out why they would be so under exposed. (the ultimate sin of film photography)
I either look for something in the scene that is about this shade of grey and meter that, or I compensate my exposure. (Trickier with the narrow exposure band of slide)
I'm sure most people know this already, I just wanted to pop it in incase someone reading this discussion didn't.
"I now return you to your regularly scheduled broadcast."

Re: Shooting Meet
Yah, the problem is my camera was made to take a mercury cell battery which are no longer available. I have put a hearing aid battery in which does work the meter but I want to see how far off it is because it's a slightly different voltage. I haven't put a roll through yet so I have no idea how far off it may be.
When I lived in Toronto I would often meter off of mark grey concrete lampposts downtown. They were a pretty reliable and just about everywhere.

Re: Shooting Meet
I figured you knew what you were doing when it came to metering. Ah what comes from film jockeying. I just saw it as a good chance to drop a little tidbit for anyone not as familiar.
I didn't know that different battery voltage would do that. I wouldn't have imagined that it would have worked at all. Hopefully it's always off by the same amount.
You've got to love the little corrections that need to be made with some older cameras. They makes it yours and yours alone. I had a 240mm lens for my 4x5 who's shutter would lag from around 1s to about 1/15th. I loved that decrepit lens. It was like an old dog, couldn't do what it used to, but you almost loved it more because of it.

Re: Shooting Meet
Pending sunshine I'll be heading north potentially as far as the park. If anyone wants to come, i have three free seats. You will more than likely need boots and snowshoes.
Re: Shooting Meet
When? Tomorrow?
I have the Greyhound game at night and Easter Dinner in the early evening but if you do it in the morning I might be up for it.
Don't have any snowshoes, though.

Re: Shooting Meet
Well, I have some stuff to try and get done over the weekend. I was thinking possibly either Saturday or Sunday in the afternoon, possibly staying as late as sunset.
Re: Shooting Meet
Let me know if/when you know for sure, I'd love to come if my schedule allows.
I went out tonight to shoot nothing in particular, it's been a while since I've done that.

Re: Shooting Meet
I'm trying to hitch a ride to Saginaw for game 2 of the playoffs tonight. I don't think my beater will make it there and back.
Don't think I'll be available today.

Re: Shooting Meet
Ok, well.. I borrowed a pair of snowshoes and I think I'm going to head up tomorrow in the late afternoon. So far, this thread "Shooting Meet" is tales of solo-trips! =)
Re: Shooting Meet
I'm really disappointed no one got back to me about transportation so I'm at home tonight.
It's probably better if I make it there for Game 4 anyway. I may not have been able to do both.

Re: Shooting Meet
Probably not going today.. overcast.. ugh.. maybe tomorrow.
EDIT: not tomorrow either, got worked out of it. I did however manage to finish my website this afternoon. It's been dogging me for at least three years now.

Re: Shooting Meet
So I think I'm heading out tomorrow (maybe Tuesday) but I definitely need to get out and use some of my lenses that have been lacking in use.
I'd love to shoot people like people shots of some sort (not an urban thing but people "posing" ish) but might just run around looking for places.
If anyone is interested in coming out let me know.
Mike -- whats your site?

Re: Shooting Meet
Tuesday is back to work for me.. I may have to scale back my ambitions to possibly Gros Cap or something much closer.
