Anybody who wants to be a people photographer (weddings, news, what have you) should watch that and really examine how he relates to people. How he justifies why he's there and why he does what he does.

In that room full of diverse people he was able to relate to each and every one of them, through sports or politics or humour. That's a great video.

He does respond differently to people in the Texas ball-room than on the streets of New York. Most street photographers, I think, try to be invisible in the HCB kind of way - a ninja-like character with ballet feet and silent camera that is always present but unnoticed by the subjects. Gilden is the exact opposite. With his wide-angle close-ups, huge flash, and his Weegee-style abruptness, Gilden is certainly going to get confronted often. Good material on what to do when getting caught.

I wonder how he handled the Japanese Yakuza after taking this shot.

But even in the NY video you can see how he justifies himself. He doesn't apologize for anything. I had a run in with someone in Toronto (Barrie, actually) when I was there a few weeks back. I took a chapter from Gilden's book when I was getting into (and trying to avoid) the argument with the guy. I'll tell you about it next time I see you.
