Lion Ride - Show From Dec
As I'm the new guy on the block I thought I'd share some of my shots from the Lion Ride show in December at Foggy's. Check out their tunes at http://www.myspace.com/lionride
Shot with the 20D, 50mm 1.8 and mad skill
#1 - Marc O'Lion
#2 - Italian Stallion
#3 - Mikey Lion
#4 - Marky Lion
#5 - Lionel Itchy
I'm also currently working on some poster design for them as a "see if it works" sort of thing, if it doesn't we'll scrap the idea.

The first shot is so awesome
Good stuff. I want to try to get into shooting a show every once and a while...hopefully my 50 1.8 treats me that well, haha.

Thanks.
It's definitely fun. Just let the guys know you're there to shoot before hand and they'll generally be cool with it. Key to the 1.8 in low light is manual focus as the auto will not work at all. I find myself always using manual focus for all lenses and it wasn't until I joined another photo forum that I found out that I was the "weird" one.

Great shots Curt. I really like the first and before last shots. (They're all good, but those really stood out for me.)
I'm with you on low light manual focus. Nothing worse than pushing the shutter at a perfect moment and hearing vrrr vrrrr without that satisfying click. (I guess at a loud concert and with better lenses, you wouldn't even hear that infernal racket.)
Really nice work.

Thanks Colin
I think the hard part with the AF in the low light is it's lack of focusing and it's misfocusing (that's not a word). When I started out I was using the autofocus non-stop and couldn't figure out why I was missing so many shots. I was using my 28-75 2.8 and then moved to the 50 1.8. The move to the 1.8 made a difference and the move to manual made it even better. The things you learn while experimenting / realizing your shots suck and trying to improve them.

Ahh, photography in a nutshell. That's my new favorite photography quote.

I'll expect royalties for when it's in use.

Re: Lion Ride - Show From Dec
I like the moment captured in #5. There's a little more post-processing going on than I usually like, which wouldn't bother me except they are all processed differently.
I don't want you to think that means I don't like them because I think they're great.

I used to never PP at all and still do it minimally. All these shots have very minimal PP done and it's all done in Lightroom. If memory serves me right I actually think #5 is how it was out of camera as the PP I was trying to do on it I hated. #1 and #4 have the same effect to them, #2 was just a B&W conversion and #3 has a wash applied.
But I do know what you mean about over processed images if it gets to a point where they look fake or don't add anything to the image I back off -- and find the images like that off putting.

Yah, I mean a lot of it is the lighting as well. Different colour gels hitting the different members. Trust me, I've been there.
Re: Lion Ride - Show From Dec
Why so hard on PP? I only ask because I'm a compulsive photoshoper and have heard this opinion from other photogs.
For me, other than superimposing stuff like on images, everything is fair game. My only real turn-off (other than those cows) is over sharpening.

Re: Lion Ride - Show From Dec
My main complaint with it is people attempting HDR and doing it badly and the image just looking horrible but them thinking it is good because it's HDR.
I think if you PP and it can enhance the image that little bit or make it look how you saw it when you shot it then that's fine. bjotoole (on this forum) does some fairly good work on his landscapes and I have a friend in my contacts on flickr who does great work PPing his images that you wouldn't fully know were pp'd at the time.
