Juried Art Exhibition
Hi Everyone,
The Art Gallery of Algoma is hosting a juried art exhibition during Bon Soo and is open to all artists in all disciplines/media. There's only one juror - Sherie McKay Gladu. It's $5 per piece and a maximum of three can be dropped off at the AGA Jan 24 and 25 between 9AM and 5PM.
I just picked up my prints that were at Chrysalis and will be entering these three:
Out of all of these, I have the most confidence in the last one. Wish me luck!

I saw info about this on Sootoday in the arts section. Still considering which photos I'll be entering. Looking forward to seeing what everyone else enters!

My frames arrived from Vistek yesterday. I was afraid that they might not come in on time.
These are the photos I'm entering:

I instantly fell in love with these shots when you posted them on Flickr. So moody.
Re: Juried Art Exhibition
Thanks. I dropped them off during lunch. I hope that they will be accepted.

Oh no! I rushed back to respond to this to tell you to make sure that while you're there to take a tour of the "China Up Close" exhibit! It's really nice, especially since as you look the photos you're either taken on a visual trip from up close and personal to wide and expansive or the reverse depending on which direction you choose to take around the room. There are some really powerful images in that display. I might even go so far as to recommend that you make a trip back there. =)
BTW, out of those three, I vote #3.
Now I'm off to shoot.. it's been far far too long.

I did take some time to look at the photographs from the "China Up Close" exhibit. I must admit that I was indifferent to most of the photographs. Nothing wrong with them but they weren't my thing. There were few photographs with people in them. One photograph that I very much liked was "Crippled Girl" (or a name similar to that) depicting a young girl writing Chinese characters on little concrete blocks that made up the sidewalk and with a crutch by her side.

Yeah! Out of all of them the people shots stuck with me most, especially her. It really gave you a sense of time.. the time she spent writing all those characters on the sidewalk.
Re: Juried Art Exhibition
Well, I got a phone call from the art gallery this morning. The 2nd shot above was rejected. No reason was given. I must admit that it is indeed the least strongest of the three. I based my decision on which to photos to submit on their popularity on flickr instead of my own instinct. I'm happy that the other two shots were accepted.

Re: Juried Art Exhibition
That's good to hear Nando! For me, I prefer #1 and #3 over #2.. but that's my personal taste. It's because the photos are so moody and dreamlike with the fog, that the tree in #2 is almost a bit too close to me - it really stands out. However, if I were the juror all three would be on the walls. =)
Re: Juried Art Exhibition
Thanks Mike. I think #2 is particularly popular on flickr because many of my contacts go gaga for bokeh. I should have known better. My first instinct was to go with the following photo instead of #2. Oh well. I'm still very happy.

Re: Juried Art Exhibition
Yes, I agree, this is much better than #2. I love the gradient in the out-of-focus background and how the dark leaves frame it. There's a curve to the "frame" as well that adds just a bit more to this.
I really loved this set when you posted it. I still do.

Re: Juried Art Exhibition
I got down to AGA today to look at the exhibition and recognized Mike's photos - I think they really show much better there. The last venue showing was just too busy and didn't do them justice. I really liked Kelley's photos too and could you believe the coincidence that her "Fire in the Sky" was hung in the same space as Mike's "Lost in Red"??

Just wanted to mention that Nando's two "tree" photos looked great too - I wondered whether they only chose two of them because of where they were placed, next to Victoria Santana's 3 black and whites.

Re: Juried Art Exhibition
Hi Nana, this is my first exhibition so I don't think you could have seen them at the Algoma Fall Festival Exhibition. However, I will be entering that one next year.
As for placement, I believe a bit of thought went into the organization of the room.
Thanks (from everyone) for going down to take a peek. It's great that the AGA supports local artists with venues like this.

Re: Juried Art Exhibition
Thanks Nana. I wasn't given a reason why my photograph was rejected. I think that it would have been the least they could have done given that the entry free was nonrefundable. Yes, the entry fee was very small but it would have been courteous. I suspect that it was because the size of the frame. I always print at 8x12 and it is impossible to find affordable frames at that size. I buy big 16x20 frames with mat board openings cut to 8x12. Three such frames would have taken up a lot of real-estate. I'm a bit disappointed that I wasn't given a reason but I'm happy that two of them were accepted. My mother was upset though.

Hey Mike - I was referring to when you had your photos at Chrysalis - if you remember I commented on a Flickr post that it was great of Julie H-H to display your work, but I thought that there was so much "stuff" at her place and they really didn't show that well there.
