Trail Recommendations
Hey everyone. My wife and I are thinking of taking a day hike this weekend, and I'm looking for recommendations on what nature/hiking trail(s) to go on. I'm a fan of the Lake Superior Provincial Park area, and have been on the Sand River and Orphan Lake trail. Anybody have any experience in the area, and can suggest a different trail to take? Anybody take the Awausee trail? If so, just how demanding is it? Are there a lot "points of interest" on this trail? Any other locations would be cool as well.... I just don't know about many.
Also, does anybody know where (locally) to purchase good maps for our area, that would show such trails? I'm having problems finding good sites on the Internet for this stuff. Any website links would also be appreciated.
Anyway, andy feedback or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Trail Recommendations
I would like to remind you to remind your wife that we have baseball playoffs this weekend -- tell her to check her email for times.
As far as trails we tried heading out to Katherine's Cove a few weeks back but got hit by rain and crap when we got out there so came back in (had one of the hounds). There's the spot in the park just before that which is supposed to have good trails, forget what it's called and it's about an hour and 20 minutes North.
As far as maps I'm not sure - the Carver might have something though but that's also a trip up North to get. Maybe Joe's Sports or the Trading Post?

Re: Trail Recommendations
Thanks Curt. Heather mentioned something about baseball, but she said that there may not be a game on Saturday, depending on how your earlier games turned out. I told her to throw the game if it means having Saturday off
I'm thinking of going back to Orphan Lake, but I'm trying to figure out how far Beatty Cove is from there, and maybe do both if possible. Awausee Trail seems to be better in the fall, due to the many valley lookout points, so we may do that one later on if we can get the time.
As for maps, I was going to try Joe Sports, but didn't even think of the trading post. Thanks.

Re: Trail Recommendations
I'm not the one to talk to about nature trails. However, my boss is involved with the Voyageur Trail Association and the Sault Naturalists. I think both of those organizations would be helpful.

Re: Trail Recommendations
I bought a 'Backroad Maps' book not too long ago and I'm pretty sure it has hiking trails in it too. I'm sure Coles would have it, I actually picked mine up at Walmart. Try the Trading Post too....they usually have a pretty good selection.
Re: Trail Recommendations
I found out that Voyageur Trial Association (VTA) has a trail guide that is sold at a view local places (Trading Post, Joe's Sports, Water Tower Inn, etc., so I'm going to check that out. Thanks Nando.
VTML - I'll check Coles out next time I'm in the mall, which is often. Thanks.

Auwasee
The Auwasee trail can be gruelling depending on the weather. We took it a couple of years ago and it took about 6 hours to complete.. a lot of ups and downs through valleys. The hike up to the second lookout (650') takes a bit but is fantabulous when the leaves turn colour. I've done every trail in the park (including the coastal), so if you need some insight, I'm your man. =)
If you've got the VTA book, I'd suggest the hike up to Robertson Cliffs. It's not nearly as far as LSPP and the hike is fairly short.. 30-45mins to the top. You can continue on to King Mountain if you're more adventurous.

Re: Trail Recommendations
Hey Mike, good to see you back online. Where have you been hiding these days? I haven't picked up the VTA book (yet), but I did get a map of LSPP from the trading post. I have been wanting to go up to the area on many occasions this year, but I've had a number of weddings and other occasions that has made me hold off until now. Hopefully in the next few weeks, as the colours are in their prime, I'll be able to make it up. I really want to do the Auwasse trail, as I'm up for the challenge, but we'll see what my wife says Anyway, if I have any specific questions, I'll fire an note your way. Thanks.
Re: Trail Recommendations
I need to get out more. Fernando and I were going to take a trip up to Wawa this summer but never got around to it. Now we're both back at work and probably won't have a chance.
Re: Trail Recommendations
Hey Brian, I'm not sure why I haven't been on here too much lately. I did get a house in May and that's been keeping me busy and away from shooting. It's been a fairly busy summer and photography has been low on my list of priorities. But like anything that we enjoy, it keeps bubbling back to the surface and I'm feeling the urge to get out more and more.
