Basketball
Pocketwizards are just too much fun. Anthony and I went out and set up some flashes, this was his setup which was way more dramatic than mine.
Re: Basketball
Just saw this on your flickr page. Love the dimension that it the off camera flash is adding and how the background is just blacked out.
What'd the players think about being flashed?
It almost looks like a promo shoot with how it's done -- I also didn't think they'd let you set flash up in a gym for a game.
Another dumb question -- what are the teams. I see Laurentian and Wolves but what league. I'll assume a high school tournament possibly (but thought bball was done with). And they seem too young for University and I don't know why the University teams would be in town, both Sault C and Algoma play in the college divisions and their seasons are long done as well.

Re: Basketball
I wish they all turned out like this. Most were either too hot or too dark. I should have kept my lens on this spot on the floor.
I asked permission before the event by email and was granted it as long as it didn't interfere. If there were any complaints I would have stopped using it.
The first game I lit by bouncing on the ceiling which gave a nice even (but boring) light. Anthony set up this lighting for game 2, I'd love to see some of his shots.

Re: Basketball
Almost all of the shots that I used strobes were keepers, and almost none of the shots without were good at all.

Re: Basketball
Good job Anthony. I went back today and did some more. This time it was at Algoma U instead of St. Basil's
Re: Basketball
These definitely have a cool feel to them that I'm digging.
So it does look like Algoma is playing. What tourny is this? I'm so confused.
And I may need to steal your lighting setups sometime to play around.

Re: Basketball
It was an exhibition tournament. Algoma was the only school playing, the rest were league teams from Sudbury, Espanola and Thunder Bay.
It's Anthony's lights, and yah I need to get a set. I wouldn't want to rely on them as a crutch every-time but they definitely came in handy.

Neat lighting, especially in that second and third batch. That George leach gym is one of the nastiest places I've ever shot. I realize that I'm dreaming but, it should be mandatory to consult a photographer before designing the lighting for any Gym. Do they all have to be so ugly?
I'm guessing this setup took away some of the stress compared to that boys HS tournament you had shot.
