Roy DeCarava, RIP
Photographer Roy DeCarava passed away. His work both revealed and documented the black experience in America. DeCarava was the first black photographer to win the Guggenheim Fellowship. In my opinion, DeCarava was one of the most influential photographers who has ever lived. His use of light, mass and darkness was masterly like that of Rembrandt. The richness of the tones and the use of light in otherwise dark scenes made his subjects to come to life. DeCarava was, perhaps, the original "available darkness" photographer.
