Toronto Empty Toronto

Post by Kenneth Armstrong Sat Feb 14, 2009 10:10 am

I took a trip to Toronto last weekend to see friends. It had been way too long, I haven't gone since October 2007.

It was a lot of fun. Last time I spent more time alone shooting the city but this time around I really focused on friends. A weekend really wasn't enough time, but it certainly was better than nothing.

Voigtlander Bessa R2A camera with Zeiss Biogon 35mm f/2 lens. Film is TRI-X rated at 400 and 1600 develped in Rodinal 1+100 @ 100 minutes. As always comments and criticism welcome and encouraged.

The 3rd one is very nice. The low-light shots show the compensating effects of diluted rodinal as detail is still there in areas where the lighting has changed drastically. Who needs HDR when we have Rodinal!

Love the portrait (5). I also liked the shoe shot you threw up somewhere else.

Thanks guys. I should have mentioned the last 2 were rated at ISO 64, so I had to pull them more than 2 stops. They still came out decent.

Toronto is looking very much like the Soo. 2nd one is good. The scene in the third one is worth revisiting, which of course would be difficult.

The second one is another one where I think the Rodinal helped in tricky lighting. The escalators were pretty scary to look down, I think it was 5 or 6 stories up. I'm amazed that first shot came out, it was at 1/8th of a second. No doubt my mini softie helped with that.

This is Rodinal 1:100 semi-stand? I hope to finally develop a roll tonight or tomorrow. I thought I had Tri-X in my M3 and was shooting it at 200ISO. I took the roll out and discovered it was Fomapan 100! Under-exposing by a stop shouldn't be much to worry about.

Yeah. The second batch were all rated at 1600. Teh last two of the first set were rated at 64 and the rest (I believe) were rated at 400.

The 64's were 1+100 for 60 minutes. The rest (400 and 1600) were done together at the same dilution for 100 minutes.

I think I'd like to try it at 200 because I've liked the results you've gotten rating TRI-X and I'd like to see what Rodinal does with it.

Haven't done Tri-X @ 200 with rodinal yet... just with D76. It should be good. I'd try to keep agitation to a minimum and be gentle to get that nice and broad range of tones. I notice an improvement in grain, contrast and tonality when agitating more gently with D76 and rodinal is much more sensitive. I think I got Tri-X @ 200 w/ D76 1:1 down to the point where I'm completely satisfied with the 'look' but it took some practice, experimentation and mistakes. Tri-X and D76 is perhaps the most forgiving combo too. Its going to be harder to master Rodinal but its very much worth it, I think.

Thanks. It was a fun trip. Great to see old friends again.

One of my friends, who is an illustrator, had some of his work published. He used a photo that I took of him for the "about the artist" section of the book. Unfortunately they didn't credit me, though he says he asked. I'm considering whether or not to send the publisher (or my friend) a bill Very Happy

This is the photo they used:

These are HP5, not TRI-X. Semi-stand developed in Rodinal 1:100 for 90 minutes.

HP5 @ 1600ISO? I prefer the tonality and grain of Tri-X. Smile What is your opinion?

Whoops. Mis-tagged. They should be at 400.

Regardless I agree, but I don't hate HP5. Life is too short for that. As an aside I probably shouldn't shoot pictures while I'm driving Very Happy

Actually, the tones and contrast is very nice on the last two. I've seen many examples of HP5 with Rodinal where the mid-tones are nearly gone. I've seen many worse cases of grain with HP5/Rodinal but also I've seen some stunning examples from people who have mastered the combo. Like the following shot:

I like this last photograph very much. Your shooting-while-driving technique must really good and windshield must be pretty clean.

Set aperture (these were f/11 - f/16), set focus to hyperfocal, set shutter speed fast enough to not show movement (though mostly I was driving pretty slow). No framing, just place camera on my steering wheel and shoot

Probably the last one I will post. Sunday Antique Market at St. Lawrence Market, I could have spent all day there. My wife and I used to go every weekend when we lived in the city.

As a nice surprise Torontoist.com selected the street shots for their Daily Photoist series. They pick one person a day and show their photos.

I don't get anything for it, but it's nice that they selected them from all their submissions.

Yeah, congratulations! They used your photos without renumeration in order to get free content and increase their ad dollars. Very Happy

There were 2 nice (but in need of a CLA) M3's at that market. One single-stroke with 50mm Summicron (with eyes) and a double-stroke with a 50mm Summicron with no eyes. I think they were $1200 and $900, respectively.

There was a cheap 90mm Leica lens (can't remember which one. Maybe an Elmarit or Elmar?) that was going for $150. I seem to remember it being LSM, not M mount.

I'm pretty sure those M3's (or ones like it) were there last time I went like 3 years ago. Razz

You should be happy with the free publicity. Very Happy Isn't that the point of posting photographs to the Torontoist flickr group?

With those prices, no wonder nobody purchases them. If the 90mm was a screw-mount, its likely to be an Elmar.
