Hot Rumour - Cosina-Voigtlander to announce 50mm f/1.1
Woke up this morning to find news of a rumour generated from Australia - probably from Scott of Mainline Photos, the CV distributor there. It looks like Kobayashi-san is close to announcing a Cosina-Voigtlander 50mm f/1.1 lens in M-mount. No confirmation from the N. American distributor Stephen Gandy yet. A few months ago, Cosina asked people what lens they wanted and the overwhelming response was a super-fast 50mm. If this is true, this will be the second super-fast M-lens for CV. This first was the 35mm f/1.2 Nokton Aspherical (aka The BEAST), which was (is) a fantastic lens. Hopefully this will bring down the prices of the super-fast lenses down to sensible levels. We were seeing $10,000 Noctiluxes and $3000 Canon 50f0.95 a few months ago.

Let's hope that the price is comparable (or lower) than the CV 35mm f/1.2! That would be a great deal.
Previous 50mm f1.1 for rangefinders are the elusive Zunow 50mm f1.1 and the ultra-expensive Noct-Nikkor 50mm f1.1. I believe that both were Sonnar-types. Che Guevara had a Nikon S2 with a 50f1.1 Noct-Nikkor - you'd think he'd use a less expensive Fed like Comrade Picasso but nope.

Re: Hot Rumour - Cosina-Voigtlander to announce 50mm f/1.1
Tom A just confirmed it on RFF... He's going to post samples later today. He claims price to be around $1100 US... which is fantastic.
Re: Hot Rumour - Cosina-Voigtlander to announce 50mm f/1.1
I saw that. Now that the cat's out of the bag, I'm sure that Tom A was very eager to start uploading his photos to flickr. I wonder how its like for him to test all this stuff for Kobayashi-san and keep it secret. I'll be taking a look at the photos as soon as I get home.
$1100 is an incredible deal given the price of other super-fast lenses for Leica M-mount/Screw-mount.
Examples from e-Pay:
Konica Hexanon-M 50f1.2: $1900 to $2600
Konica Hexanon-M 60f1.2: $2300 to $2700
Canon 50f0.95: $1500-2500 (with and without necessary conversion)
Leica Noctilux 50f1.2 Aspherical: $12,000 to $13,000
Leica Noctilux 50f1: $5000 to $15000
Leica Noctilux 50f0.95 ASPH: $9995 (current version's MSRP)
Nikon Noct-Nikkor 50f1.1: $4500 (needs Nikon to Leica M adapter - add $300-400)
Zunow 50f1.1: $?????? (to rare to price accurately - probably over $5000)

Looks ok. TomA doesn't take the most exciting test photos but they give you an idea of what they can do. There's a few in there that pique my interest.

Re: Hot Rumour - Cosina-Voigtlander to announce 50mm f/1.1
I think that I will have to see more shots taken with it before I pass judgement - especially photographs in colour. For a f1.1 lens, it looks to be really good at every aperture. That's something that can't really be said for any other super-fast lens except for the Noctilux and the Konicas (but the Konicas are slower).
I'm excited about this lens coming to market. I'm probably not going to get one but I am eager to see how it affects the over-inflated prices of the other super-fast lenses. I'm secretly hoping that the Noctilux f1.0 comes back down to below $2000 mark.

Re: Hot Rumour - Cosina-Voigtlander to announce 50mm f/1.1
I think it's a lens that will sell well... how many users out there have Noctilux-envy?
Re: Hot Rumour - Cosina-Voigtlander to announce 50mm f/1.1
I agree that it will sell very well for an RF lens.
I think that for most its lust not envy - Noctilust.
I think that people who want the Noctilux get it for the 'look' it gives. It is much more than the short DOF too. One can achieve the same DOF with a 85 or 90 at f2 but it won't look the same as a Noctilux. Only the 75mm Summilux-M and the 80mm Summilux-R give something close. All are Walter Mandler designs (and made in Midland, Ontario).
The Noctilux at its best from The Master - Toshihiro "Tommy" Oshima:

The new 50mm f1.1 Nokton looks like it has a similar light fall-off as the Noctilux f1 but not as drastic. The Noctilux has a real dreamy, swirly, and smooth bokeh. The new 50f1.1's bokeh is certainly different than that of the Noctilux. People are already criticizing the bokeh and saying that it is similar to that of the CV 40f1.4 Nokton Classic. I don't think it is that bad. This is one of those lenses that has to be learnt and used appropriately. The Noctilux can certainly get weird in some circumstances.
For low-light/available-light photography, I still think that the Cosina-Voigtlander 35mm f1.2 Nokton Aspherical is the best, practical choice along with the new 21 and 24mm Summilux-ASPH lenses from Leica. The wider-angle is usually more suitable for interiors. You get a 1-2 stop advantage over a 50mm in shutter-speed. And larger and more usable depth of field which gives better, more consistent focusing. The 35f1.2, for examples, has approximately the same depth of field as a 50mm at f2.8.
In the following photo, if I was using a 50mm Noctilux instead a 35mm Nokton, the lamp may have not been as well defined because of the very short DOF and the men in the back would have just been a complete blur. Actually, I may have not been able to use a 50mm at all since I was shooting at 1/8th in that basement!

Stephen Gandy now has the news posted on his website and is taking deposits on the lens.

A write-up about the lens including a nice photo of Tom.
