Franke & Heidecke Bankrupt

Post by Nando on Sun Mar 15, 2009 5:17 pm

Franke & Heidecke, the makers of the wonderful Rolleiflex TLR, Rolleicord TLR, Rollei SL66 and other fine cameras is bankrupt according to an article from German magazine Colorfoto.

Besides the Rolleiflex TLR line, F&H was currently manufacturing the Rollei 6008i and Rollei Hy6, which is also sold as the Sinar Hy6 and Leaf AFi.

I'm not surprised but I'm a bit sad. In any case, we'll have plenty of great Rolleiflexes to play with for many years to come as they were built to last. Smile

Personally, I feel that I should have gone into medium format with a Rolleiflex TLR rather than an Arax-built Kiev system. One day, I may just switch. Who knows?

I'll have to ask my dad which Rollei TLR he had. It was the one camera that I dared not touch and he sold it (of course) just before I got back into photography.

Wow. Another one falls.

My first few rolls of medium format film were thru a Rolleiflex TLR.

Little tanks.

Thanks for the info Nando.

Perhaps one of their partners, Sinar or Leaf, can step in. Where are their digital backs going to be used if F&H really goes under?

Hasselblad and Imacon are one. (Though others companies do make digital backs for Hasselblads)

Phase One are tied mainly with Mamiya though they make backs for the Hasselblad V and old Contax 645.

The Leica S2 doesn't use backs as its fully digital.

I know that Leica has a partnership with Jenoptic, Sinar's parent company (and formerly Carl Zeiss Jena) to develop and supply components and software for digital imaging. I don't know if that will have any bearing on F&H fate.
