The MKII fell perfectly into my expectations (after the D90 came out, anyway). Exciting though. Lots of bells and whistles on that one.

Well, not exactly my cup of tea so I'm not too too enthusiastic. Canon is also coming out with a new version of its 24mm f/1.4.

The Mk I of that lens is very nice but is over 10 years since intro. My buddy Don uses it with a 5D almost exclusively (along with the 35mm f/1.4). Wonder if he'll upgrade and I can get his sloppy seconds?
Re: NEW 5D, G10, etc
Haha, that'd be some nice sloppy seconds. But how would you fit that on your rangefinders?

Well one good thing about the Canon's DSLR's, to me, is that can take Leica-R lenses. Besides the Leica R8 or R9 with the digital 'DMR' backs, the only other digital solution for using R lenses is the Olympus 4/3rd system. R lenses can mount on other cameras with adapters but only the EOS and 4/3rd mounts can focus them at infinity. It looks like a Leica R10 isn't being announced at Photokina as previously thought so the Canons are probably the best solution for someone who wants to shoot R lenses with a digital camera.
You know, Nikon and Pentax users have the luxury of using excellent Zeiss and Voigtlander glass on their cameras. Canon owners that want to use these lenses have to use adapters. Personally, I think that it would be really smart if Leica made available their entire line of R-lenses in EOS mount. There is some absolutely spectacular R-lenses that I'm sure Canon users would love: the 15mm f/2.8 Super-Elmarit, the 100mm f/2.8 Macro-Elmarit, the 180mm f/2 Summicron. All that evil, SLR money can then be used to finance/subsidize the rangefinder line for people like me.

Well just look at what Zeiss is doing with the new ZE mount that just got announced.
50/1.4 and 85/1.4 are first.
21/2.8 to follow in 2009.
I would love to shoot Zeiss glass on a 5D Mk II.

Umm... I spoke too soon. Somehow I missed the news about the ZE's.

In truth, I shouldn't be paying any attention to the Photokina camera pr0n festival! I should be out shooting or paying attention to the Aries show instead where the focus is on photographs/photographers and not gear.
I was somewhat hoping for a digital Leica R10 to come out. Not because I want it but I was hoping that it would result in a price drop for older Leica R's - the R6.2 in particular. I got my MP really cheap two years ago because, at the time, all the attention was on the M8 that was released at Photokina that year. I was really lucky - a well-used MP (without warranty) goes for more money today than what I paid for a new one during the M8 craze two years ago. Ken, have you notice all the great gear that has come up for sale on RFF lately? 35 Summiluxes, a 35 Summicon IV, 50 Noctiluxes, 75 Summiluxes, a super-rare, original 1957 MP even and at pretty good prices (relatively speaking). Hmm... wonder why? If I ever put my 50 Summilux up for sale to finance a Canon/Nikon something-dee-something, whatever-they-call-it, at the next Photokina someone ought to throw me into a nut-house!

Yah the Noctilux dump happened pretty quickly after the announcement of the new one. I check the classifieds every day and wish I had some extra cash.
It'll be fun to tire kick in Toronto, anyway. I'm sure they LOVE that

Yeah, it seems that they're either frantically selling their gear to be able to finance the new one (or other new gear) or ardently complaining about the high prices. Photokina is a special time that brings out the best in people.
It's too bad that you won't have a chance to fondle a new M8.2 and an M8. The M8.2 has the old-style vulcanite covering, which is quite the delight.

I'm hoping to play with a used R-D1, though I know it's doubtful I will find one.
You don't think 8 Elm will have an M8 on display?
