Haven't posted anything in a while

Post by crowellphotographs on Mon Jun 16, 2008 1:58 pm

Figured I should post something, it has been a while.

Here's a bit of a mixed bag, and a slide show at the end. I got a new flash, and have been goofing around with it lately.

Here's my parents...

A self portrait, just goofing around with the new light.

One of my puppy...

And finally a big slideshow from Algoma U's independence.

First off, thanks for posting something, it was really dead here for a while.

The Algoma U shots are great, I would love to read your captions as well but really just about any of those shots should have gone front page. It's refreshing seeing familiar personalities and locations shot with skill instead of by someone who doesn't care.

Loved the dog portrait, the power line entering dad's head in the second shot bugs me a bit but overall they are really nice. Great colour on them and I like the way they are engaging the camera (or the person behind it).

Thank you both.

I'm glad you spotted that damn cable in the portrait. I don't know why but I just couldn't see it. Sloppy.

vtml, when I read your post, I looked over at my dog and told him someone thought he was beautiful. His whole face lit up with a huge smile.

Those Algoma U photos were a ton of fun, having gone there and taken classes with Dr Perlini, It was really neat to see him and Dr. Ross so emotional about it. It was also a lot of fun because of the lens I FINALLY decided on buying. (Nikon 18-200mm VR-ED)
It's a slow lens at 3.5-5.6 and there were some less than flattering reviews, but I spoke with two photojournalist/editorial photographers I know and respect. They both raved about it's value. It all came down to not wanting to spend 1700$ or more on a DX lens that may be obsolete in two years.
This lens holds up really well for the print sizes I'm looking for, and the added bonus of not having to carry and switch between two lenses(or buy another body) was and still is the biggest selling factor for me. Despite being ultra careful, I had already needed to clean the sensor on that camera twice. An absolutely nerve racking process.
When I though it over, if I really needed supreme print quality with the ability to print gigantic images, I'd probably go either medium format or to my 4x5 anyway.
Next step will be to buy a nice 50mm f1.?...
(maybe that should have gone under the equipment forum. oops)

Nice photos. I think I've met your mother somewhere. Does she work for the Algoma District School Board? I like the dog portrait. It reminds me very much of formal studio portraits in the past where people had to hold an unnatural pose for a very long time - often with the help of a brace to keep their heads from moving. I also like how the backdrop closely matches the dog's fur in colour and texture.

Congratulations on the lens purchase. I'm not familiar with any of the Nikon AF lenses but it seems like a very practical choice. I thought that they were already obsolete since the new D300 (or whatever its called) cannot use them without cropping the image. scratch
