Snowshoe Camp - Long Exposures

I spent a chilly weekend out at Snowshoe Camp on Wakomata lake, and took an evening to photograph a nearby creek. Below are a few of the long exposures taken, which can also be viewed larger on my flickr site. Taken for fun, but feel free to comment if you want.

25 second exposure of the creek:

I went back the the creek and waterfalls a few times during the weekend, as it was too cold to go out on the lake, so I may be posting more of my favourites as I go through them all.

Are those daytime? What kind of ND filter did you use?

I bought a few ND8 and ND4 filters hoping to get some daytime shots like this but I obviously miscalculated. Only able to get like 4 seconds at f/22 ISO 100

My pinhole is f128 and exposure in sunlight at 100 ISO around 4-5 mississippies... f/128 is five stops smaller than f/22 so I'm thinking you would need an ND8.

Contrary to what the EXIF data states, these were actually taken around 8:15pm and not 8:15am. It appears that I don't know how to set my camera clock properly. I bet that makes a whole lot more sense now. No ND filters required (or owned).

As I don't have any ND filters, I ended up having to wait until the dark rain clouds blocked the sun for my daytime shots (soon to be posted). Then I'd run like hell to get out of the rain

The first one has that misty milky feel but also doesn't look real (if you know what I mean), almost looks like someone painted over top the water spots, maybe if we edged the exposure back just a bit to have somewhat of a still realistic feel.

I'm sure it's all just me though.

Last year I missed a perfect shot of a deer while out on the 4-wheeler, so now the camera goes everywhere I do while out at the camp. This deer was just standing on the side of the road, watching us for about 2 minutes. It was quite amazing.

As for the 1st photo, I hear what you're saying Cujo... It's definitely far from looking real. However, I thought it was kinda cool and different, which is why I posted it. There will be many more nights out at camp, so I'll edge the exposure back see what I get.

Hey don't get me wrong, it def looks cool and awesome and fantastadoodle but I was just suggesting other attempts as well. If you're there might as well shoot the multiple diff shots you can think of then see what you like best etc.

And looking at it again, clone out the stick in the bottom of the frame and it'll flow better I think

The stick has been cloned out... I'm glad you pointed that out. My cloning ability kinda stinks, but I think it turned out pretty good.

Yep. Looks a lot better with the stick not there and you did do a pretty good job with the cloning.

Sick! They definitely have a majorly artificial feel to them, but I'm digging it. The color of the logs/moss/etc. in #3 just jumps out at me.

Thanks Anthony. The cool thing is that I didn't even mess with the greens much in #3 at all... just a tiny bit of saturation.

Most of the post work on these were a free photoshop action called "Paint with Light", which is pretty much a variation of dodging and burning. And to top them off, a little sharpening to give that extra pop.

Interesting stuff there regarding the PP work--like I said, definitely loving the look you got there.
