Words cannot express how much this sucks!!!

Franke & Heidecke, the makers of the wonderful and historically signficant Rolleiflex and Rollei cameras along with the current Leaf AFi and Sinar Hy6 systems will be shutting down no later than September.

It also produced lots of equipment used in the Soviet and Russian space programs and it is currently under the control of the Ukrainian space program.

Photographer Roy DeCarava passed away. His work both revealed and documented the black experience in America. DeCarava was the first black photographer to win the Guggenheim Fellowship. In my opinion, DeCarava was one of the most influential photographers who has ever lived. His use of light, mass and darkness was masterly like that of Rembrandt. The richness of the tones and the use of light in otherwise dark scenes made his subjects to come to life. DeCarava was, perhaps, the original "available ...

Don't know if anyone is interested as it is hard to read people on this forum, but it looks like the brochure for the Leica M9 was (perhaps accidentally) leaked by Leica's webmaster. The M9 is the highly anticipated full-frame digital M from Leica. The previous digital M8 had a 1.33x crop factor, which was unsatisfactory for many M users like myself. This camera will be the smallest full-frame 35mm digital camera available when it is released on September 9th.

Here's the link to it:

On September 9, 2009 at 9:09 a.m., Leica Camera AG is holding a press conference. Could it be the announcement of the M9?

Some Leica dealers are confirming the rumour and even quietly taking pre-orders. Apparently the M9 will have a full-framed sensor, 18-20 MP from Kodak. The IR problem with the M8 is said to be resolved too - the M8 lacked an IR filter in front of the sensor which actually resulted in higher quality images but sometimes funky-looking blacks when shooting in colour. It was a superior format to the Super-8 cartridge. The cartridge could record going forward or backwards. In addition, the cartridge had a metal pressure plate instead of a plastic one.

It looks like Kobayashi-san is close to announcing a Cosina-Voigtlander 50mm f/1.1 lens in M-mount. No confirmation from the N. American distributor Stephen Gandy yet. A few months ago, Cosina asked people what lens they wanted and the overwhelming response was a super-fast 50mm. If this is true, this will be the second super-fast M-lens for CV.

Olympus and Panaleica came up with a "micro" 4/3 standard mount for mirror-less cameras. Obvious assumption is that an digital rangefinder or a compact auto-focus camera an interchangeable lenses. I'm thinking digital successors to the very compact Leica CL or the excellent Contax G system. However wide-angles becoming telephotos doesn't seem like a very pleasant thought. A 35mm would become like a 70mm in 4/3 mount. It would be nice if C-mount cine lenses can be mounted. There are ...

MORE BAD NEWS!!!!

Fotoman Camera, makers of excellent medium format and large format cameras, has ceased production!

http://www.fotomancamera.com/news.asp#5668

Fotoman is mainly known for their medium format panoramic cameras. Personally, I always considered their 45PS camera for use as a ultra-wide, 4x5 press-type camera with a Schneider 47mm Super-Angulon XL. There is a 12mm and several 15/16mm lenses available for the Leica but I found that going so wide in such a small format ...

The top Voigtlander rangefinders were traditionally medium format 6x6 and 6x9 folders. The great Bessa RF from the 1930's was replaced by equally great Bessa II after the war. Cosina is showing a new medium format rangefinder at its booth; the Bessa III 667. It's a very portable folder, like the previous Bessa, capable of 6x6 or 6x7 and takes both 120 and 220 film. The lens is a 80mm f/3.5 Heliar. It will be available in the spring of 2009. There will be a twin Fuji branded model sold only in ...

I just got back my last roll of Kodachrome film with a note attached that the Qualex lab which ships K64 from Canada to the US is closing and they will not accept them any more. I knew it was coming but this is pretty sad.

There is only one lab in the world that still processes them and for now they are still in business but this is a huge blow... the hub that sent for Eastern (all of?) Canada has ceased operation and I doubt that many customers will ship their own.

To put it in perspective ...

Digital Railroad goes out of business

Many pro photographers relied on Digital Railroad to upload, sell and archive their images. Think of it as Flickr for pros. All that ends tomorrow night when the servers get shut down with very little notice for their customers. One of the biggest draws to DRR was archival, and I'm sure some pros relied on it solely to backup at least some of their photos because they thought it ...

Leica is holding a press conference at Photokina in a few minutes. An announcement of the new Leica S2 SLR is expected. Like the specs of the original S1 digital studio camera back in 1997, the specs for the S2 are said to be staggering! 30x45mm sensor - 37MP. Leica invented auto-focusing back in the 1970's but it has finally decided to add the feature to a camera. 9 new lenses are expected. It camera is basically a medium-format digital SLR that is roughly the same size as the top Canon/Nikon.

The camera takes C-mount lenses and a number of other photography lenses via adapters including Leica M-mount lenses. It has 80gB of solid state memory, the body is solid, milled aluminium and has a very small form-factor. The only problem is the price - nearly $10,000 but it does include Ikonoskop's own 9mm f/1.5 lens.

I did read a recent interview with Leica's owner/CEO, Andreas Kaufman, describing what he would like to see in a digital p&s - good and fast wide-angle, a hot-shoe for an external viewfinder. It seemed that he was describing the Ricoh GRD.

The King of the Night is dead.

Although still listed on the Leica website, the legendary 50mm f/1 Noctilux is no longer on Leica pricelists and it seems that production has indeed stopped. It seems that the very tiny market for this available light darkness lens was too small to bear the extreme price increases due to the US dollar going belly-up. However there quite a few people that insist that an even faster replacement must be coming from Leica. Even if that turns out to be true, this is certainly an end of an era.

AP, MySpace and Fair Use Rights

At first this may seem off-topic but I think it's very important information in this day and age. When this whole Eliott Spitzer story hit the front page and his prostitute was named the Associated Press and other media outlets jumped on to MySpace for her image.
Lenswork Magazine no longer on newstands

Lenswork Magazine, the best photography magazine in the world, will no longer be sold on newstands. So if anybody here is planning a trip to Sudbury just to get the magazine, you will be disappointed. Lenswork is not going away though. It will be available through subscriptions or single-issue sales through the Lenswork website.

I very much respect their decision given that 70% of magazines printed go to waste.
